Excerpt from Nathan Winograd’s No Kill Blog:
Go Valpo!
When you think of the great state of Indiana, what is the first thing which comes to mind? If you said “No Kill,” you’d be right! After reading Redemption, Porter County (Indiana) commissioners and advocates succeeded in getting the twenty year shelter director of the county’s animal control shelter in Valparaiso and almost all of the staff removed from their positions. What was once a shelter that killed the vast majority of animals, sold live animals to an animal research facility on the side, and even cruelly killed the animals has been No Kill since a new team took over.
When I visited this past weekend, dogs were playing outside, being walked by volunteers, kittens were being bottle fed, adopters were coming through the shelter in droves, the place was clean, and the animals had enrichment items. But not everyone is happy. The old regime is publicly attacking the shelter for saving the lives of animals. The excuse: they don’t want aggressive dogs being adopted out. But they also apparently don’t want friendly dogs, cats, kittens, puppies, or anyone to be adopted out either or they wouldn’t have killed so many when they were running the show.
The reality? This is not about the animals or public safety for the Naysayers. The truth is that the claim about aggressive dogs is nothing more than a smokescreen since No Kill is compatible with public safety and does not contemplate the adoption of truly vicious dogs. This appears to be about nothing more than payback for being removed from their positions.
