The city of Virginia Beach, as we mentioned in a post this past weekend, is seeking a Shelter Director and they have made a commitment to find someone who holds lifesaving as a high priority. The position is newly created and will, at this time, remain within the police department.
This is an amazing opportunity to integrate lifesaving programs in an animal control setting. While some of the requirements of animal control are seemingly at odds with lifesaving advocacy, both can be balanced with finesse and commitment to both animals and the law. The opportunity exists to make positive improvements on behalf of both animal advocacy and animal control.

Animal Care Shelter Manager (Director)
Minimum Requirements:
Requires a Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university and six years of progressive professional experience in a related field such as Business, Public Relations, Communications, Public Administration, Public Health, Veterinary or Animal Sciences, Law or a related field which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
Possession of a valid Virginia or North Carolina driver’s license.
Successful completion of a background investigation including polygraph examination.
Job Duties:
Individual will create and maintain an adoption-friendly Animal Care and Control shelter by planning, organizing, directing and supervising a staff composed of both city employees and volunteers who are customer-service oriented and committed to animal welfare by providing a humane and safe environment for all animals; communicate with a variety of audiences within the city, volunteers, and other national experts in the field of animal care; promote animal care and adoption; and perform related work as required. Applicant must be committed to an adoption-friendly philosophy in which only those animals that are determined to be too ill or too aggressive are euthanized.
Preferences:
Experienced shelter manager with atrack record of implementing creative and engaging educational programming and volunteer activities and successful collaborations with community groups, veterinarians and others. Must be effective in supervising employees and volunteers and in budget oversight. Experience as a project manager for new building construction is a plus.
