How Do You Measure Progress?

How Do You Measure Progress?

When seeking to improve the plight of animals in shelters there are a few basic metrics that can gauge the success of lifesaving efforts. How many animals are euthanized; how many savable animals are euthanized; have adoptions and tranfers to rescues increased and so on.

But there’s another means to measure success that’s not as concrete but yet more important than any other variable - the decision from within the community to seek out and hire a compassionate and caring animal shelter director.

That’s what is happening right now in the City of Virginia Beach. In a “position available” announcement that was forwarded to me it was clearly spelled out in the job duties:

Applicant must be committed to an adoption-friendly philosophy in which only those animals that are determined to be too ill or too aggressive are euthanized.

No, this is not a private “humane society” but rather the animal control enforcement unit within the City of Virginia Beach Police Department.

No Kill sheltering is exactly what they have described, “reserving euthanasia for only those animals determined to be too ill or too aggressive” and having “adoption friendly” and rescue friendly programs in place. Despite the anti-no-kill rhetoric that you can’t run a no kill animal control facility (so therefore you shouldn’t even attempt it) Virginia Beach deserves kudos for setting their sights high and recognizing what will need to be done to achieve it.

That’s how success is measured.

If you are reading this on or near the publication date and are interested in applying for the position you can find it on listed as Animal Control Manager (Director).
