Adoption fees & variable pricing:

How much is that doggie (or kitty) in the window?

Adoption fees are a means of recouping some of the expense of making an orphaned pet adoptable but they often don't come close to covering real costs including shelter staff and veterinary treatment.

How is an adoption fee relative to the value of an animal? Can lower adoption fees improve overall adoption rates? Does a "discounted" adoption fee mean the animal has less value? Are you for or against reduced fees? What are the most successful shelters doing in terms of adoption fees?
